Moscow is having a Growing Spurt…

Moscow has officially, unofficially been given her new boundaries and as normal in this world, the amount of increase has increased from original plans. That is normal and I guess that it is better to go bigger and not smaller.

The planned enlargement of Moscow’s boundaries is going to include more land than first thought.

City Hall says the Russian capital will now grow by 16,000 hectares. The expansion will be mainly in the south of the city.

Moscow will grow to include Skolkovo town, which hosts Russia’s new innovation hub, and Rublevo-Arkhangelskoe village, where Russia’s international financial center will be located.

Russia says Hold on West about Syria…

The drums for a war on Syria are beating loudly these last few days. In fact I could hear them resounding over the ocean all night and even resonating as far as Moscow inland…

Keep it up everyone! So you can beat your chest harder and rattle those sabers to scare the world to do your bidding. Syria is in the gun sites now just like Libya was 6 months ago…

As the West gets totally financial devastated, the more push come shove, will the West become…

Beat them drums for war – Beat them Drums for war…

A division is growing East and West…

PS: Remember 1983? This old cartoon seems to be still in vogue…

1 + 1 could equal Venezuela and Libya…

I talked earlier about Venezuela wanting its gold back from the West. Another reason could be associated with the rumors that Gaddafi has found protection with Venezuela and his friend Chavez. Then that makes perfect sense also…

But the rumors are flying on this side of the world and have been for two days at least. Russia posting this morning several articles and now China has posted article after article about it and just in the last hour the English Chinese news has posted: Gaddafi family members to be evacuated from Tunisia on board Venezuelan plane, A Venezuelan plane has landed on the island of Djerba to evacuate members of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s family, Tunisian radio, Mosaique FM, reported on Friday. The news was announced by the radio’s correspondent on the Tunisia- Libyan border…

Starting to look closer to a world war everyday. I woke up last night and realized that an East/West war is building. At one point China and Russia are going to have to step into the fray. That is when it will get interesting…

This Morning in Russia I had Chicory instead of Coffee…

In fact I have been starting to drink more chicory than coffee. (A lot more.) In Kiev, Ukraine I fell off the band wagon and drank coffee, but here in Russia it is easier to keep on a pattern. So I decided it was bothering me that I am saying that I am drinking coffee and in reality I am drinking chicory much more often than not. Switching to chicory was for health reasons as chicory is actually good for diabetics such as me…

Sveta says who cares if you drink chicory or coffee? But after I thought about it for a few days. I guess I care! It is time that I remove the coffee and replace with chicory. Though it just does not sound as appropriate to say, “The World of Russia and a Cup of Chicory…”

Or maybe in Russia that really does make more sense… 🙂

So it looks like I need to do some thinking’s over a cup of chicory…

Venezuela wants Gold Reserves back home…

What happens when a country wants its gold back and they want it in solid form? Not paper but real Gold! What happens when the banks that keep the gold do not have that much real gold or it depletes all the supply they have, to give it back?

So the news that Hugo Chavez made a decision to recall Venezuela’s gold reserves stored in U.S. and European banks, was being done to protect the country from economic troubles in the developed world. Is no surprise to a sane human and makes total sense. It is Venezuela’s gold and they can do what they want with it. It also was announced that this other assets will also be distributed to countries that are safer such as China, Russia and Brazil…

In a real world that is fair: Chavez (Venezuela) made a smart move.  The U.S. and Western Europe have seized Libya’s assets and are handling the billions of dollars as if it was their own money to give.  Some will be given to the “rebel” government, some will be payed to Western companies to re-build Libya, some will pay for oil companies to move into Libya to control the oil fields… and some money frankly will just go “missing”. Actions like that have consequences…

Since the West has proven over and over again that they can freeze and seize assets that are kept under their control at will (Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, etc…) why would any sane world leader trust the West with their countries money or security?  I’m surprised more aren’t following suit and dis-investing in the West…

What it all means is that the world realizes that money kept in the USA and Western Europe is not a safe bet anymore. In fact it is a unwise move and that issues has been brought about by the actions of the Western world…

This is enough gold to cause a serious implosion: This could be considered an outright attack on the West as major financial markets. This is a big question mark on the West as a safe place to keep your gold and other assets. Could this start a run on pulling gold from the US, UK, European Union and Switzerland? I see by Google that Venezuela’s gold reserves are 13th in the world. This might have much more dire consequences than Venezuela understands. The Western press has already started the propaganda and the commentators have already taken up the war cry against Venezuela. But then maybe they do understand and the consequences of leaving the gold in the West is greater than taking it back home where it belongs…

What will happen to Venezuela, over this move? Right now this is a staggering amount of money (11 billion in gold, not worthless paper). The West is broke (very broke) and most likely does not have enough gold to do what is necessary or really does not want to return the gold. The West can not afford any more countries to want their gold which is stored in the Western vaults. In a fair world nothing will happen, but in the Western world who sees this as a challenge to her empire. The repercussions are sever. That is what keeps more countries from pulling their assets… (right now at least)

It is called ruling by “Terror”…

In the name of national security on the Web, blockage is thy name…

I thought it would be interesting to show you the list of sites that are now being blocked from being shown in Ukraine. What started out as just a blockage on Windows to Russia has now grown and encompassed at least two servers. 180.92.169.153 and 180.92.169.158…

My host is not sure what is happening and as you can see at the bottom of the list it also includes one of their own main domains. (znet) The list is growing daily…

My host has been working on this since I got back and it is a real puzzle. It is now a blockage somewhere between Ukraine and India in the web system. As you know Ukraine allowed me to have access again to the site Windows to Russia. They were true to their word and did. Then as my time in Ukraine ended the site was blocked again. Ukraine said that they did not do it this time. The first time was during a lot of political issues happening downtown Kiev. I was asked to stay away and I did. After a lot of testing on the second blockage, I now believe them on the new issue. But someone has extended the blockage and it now affects many sites that originally when located in Ukraine it did not affect: (See list below)

What we do know is that this is a beta software that was used. It came from a Western source. It was admitted to have been tested in Ukraine. But now it seems to have either caused a huge issue or is still in effect outside of Ukraine. (the latter is my guess) Ukraine internally has been cleared on the second blockage…

If we find the core of the issue, I will post all details. This is starting to look like governments will be blocking at will and that testing on this issue is being done world wide. It looks like in the name of national security, blockage is thy name…

The beginnings have started and you will see blockage of Twitter and Facebook as common place in the future. Belarus just blocked VKontakte a social network site in Russia, due to social unrest. The West said very little about it because, well they want to do it also. Britain, France and America has huge desires to block Twitter and Facebook and you can not be bad mouthing people when you want to do the same…

Salmon and Potato Salad… (mimoza)

My up bringing on a farm in the Midwest of America did not include a lot of salmon. In fact salmon in my life was canned and labeled pink or red. It was always mixed with bread n eggs and became a cheap meal. Sveta looks at me funny when I mention buying salmon in that form. 90% of the salmon in Russia is fresh and we are talking about tons of salmon everywhere. While not  sea food you would think it is by the fact that many stores in Moscow carry fresh salmon. If you can not find fresh salmon you will find it in a sealed see through pack. It comes smoked many times and salted…

It still amazes me after all these years to see huge isles of salmon at the chain supermarkets. It is not uncommon to see people carrying huge 10 to 20 kilo whole fish out the door to have a feast at home. In fact I think that I am stifling Sveta’s desire for salmon because it does not cross my mind as a normal food item. But to a Russian it is as normal as caviar…

So lets do a few salmon recipes over the next month. It is only fair, because Russians love salmon…

Lets try: Salmon and Potato Salad

Ingredients

  • 3 eggs (boiled hard sliced or diced)
  • 4 potatoes (cooked, peeled, shredded, cubed or diced)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 1 onion (diced and chopped)
  • 16 (1 lb) ounces of salmon raw or cooked (I prefer cooked and you can use canned also. Just drain well! Cut raw into thin strips.)
  • 1 to 2 cup mayonnaise or as needed
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley or mint as a garnish if you desire. (Russians say grasses)
Directions

  1. Put eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring water to a boil for 10 to 12 minutes or use your method of hard boiled eggs. Remove from hot water, cool, and peel.
  2. While the eggs are cooking, place the diced potatoes in a saucepan with just enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, or until tender. Remove from heat, drain, and set aside to cool.
  3. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions, and saute until lightly browned and translucent, about 10 to 12 minutes.
  4. Flake (lay) salmon and spread it over the bottom of a glass baking dish or serving dish. Spread the sauteed onions over the salmon. Gently spread a little bit of the mayonnaise over the onion layer. Top with potatoes, and spread enough mayonnaise just to add moisture to the layer. Finally, slice the eggs, and cover the layer of potatoes. Spread mayonnaise over the eggs, and garnish with chopped parsley or what ever grass you like. If you wish, you can reserve some of the egg to chop and sprinkle over the top as well. Chill for 1 to 2 hours before serving.

Sveta loves a salad made at the near by store that follows this same pattern. This is not a hot dish at all and is served cold and is considered a salad. The onions do not have to be cooked if you love raw onions,. I also see this dish with a layer of shredded cooked beets on top, carrots in it, corn in it and you can dice the eggs and I find that I like it better as a warm dish and that is most likely the German/American Midwesterner in me… 🙂

Remember as always that there are as many recipes of this salad as there are Russians. This is a true Russian favorite…

Is Political Rhetoric in Russia Being Stirred by the West?

Mikhail Gorbachev does what he does best and what he is paid by the West to do: Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader, has called for a removal of Russia’s leadership and criticized the United Russia party as a “worse version of the Soviet Communist party”

I guess Gorby has to pay back for that elaborate birthday party that Europe threw him this year. This is also a sign that elections are coming in Russia. Gorbachev has to keep the rhetoric up to earn his Western salary…

There is a joke told from the old days of Soviet Union and it was even presented in the Western presses then and now:

“And one man turned in the queue (line) to his neighbour and said: ‘I’m fed up with this, I blame Gorbachev, I’m going to kill Gorbachev,’ and off he went. He came back two days later and the people in the queue (line) said: ‘Did you kill Gorbachev?’ ‘No,’ he replied ‘The queue (line) to kill Gorbachev was just too long’.”

Did not seem funny to me but the Western press ate it up at one time and still use it. Sometimes joke are truth and that is why they are jokes instead of reality…

So the Western press plays up the rhetoric and the games of politics continue. But what everyone should be doing is looking at their home front and realize that the cards are collapsing…

Coffee and Comments and that Blockage…

I was savoring that cup of coffee this morning. It was a delight and made the mood better as I finished up some issues that were dragging Windows to Russia down…

Most readers do not realize that it is just not readers that stop by a web site. There is a whole array of trashy spambots, spam robots, automated commenting and dozens of other pain in the butt type things that destroy a websites peace and tranquility…

After over 30,000 automated comments in about two days and that is on top of the millions that I have received over the years. I have destroyed the comment system in the WordPress system that we have. It is history, kaput, exiled, stomped in the ground and removed from the coding…

Comments have always been an issue and the increase in spam was exponentially growing faster than the systems can keep ahead of it. So two days ago I made the move. It has been so quiet in back of the house on the blog, that it echoed. No spam, no automated comments and no trash at all. No unnecessary load on the servers and no drop in page counts. For quite awhile I have been blocking spam and just sending it to the trash immediately. I knew that real comments have been hurt by this but it was so overwhelming that there was nothing else to do about it…

Now it is all on a outside server and not on mine anymore. Livefyre.com is the new system and it is fairly basic and not a lot of bells and whistles. It is easy to use Twitter, Facebook, Google and Link-in to sign in with. If you want to spam it, then spam it because you are on their server not mine anymore…

Sometimes that spam was so bad that it would affect the operation of Windows to Russia. It would slow things down and on a shared server that is not good. WordPress is referred to as a spam magnet and I can vouch for that…

I just turned off the magnet…

Now lets talk about the Ukraine Blockage issue. Progress is being made and my hosting company is a little bit perturbed by the issue. I have recruited a hosting company in Ukraine to help and we are trying to pin point what is happening. Right now it is just not my site that is blocked but has been extended to the whole server that Windows to Russia resides on. This situation is blocking some large websites and news websites. I expect it to be cleared up, but the desire to find out who and how it is being done has become a priority. What started out being just my site blocked three weeks ago has now become a server of 300+ websites. All blocked in Ukraine…

This issues is not good and I have been happy to see that Ukrainian server hosts are dead set against what has happened. I have been offered to set up a mirror in Ukraine to get around the issue. Many Ukrainian hosts are non USA based and they are proud of that fact. That is something that we will have to see about later. We were ranked very high in Ukraine before this happened on Alexa. Alexa had us ranked at 9000 in Ukraine and that ranking is being lost now..
