Russia Refilling the Peat Bogs That were Emptied long ago…

It seems that once a long time ago they drained the peat fields around Moscow. It seems that as early as 1918 Soviet engineers drained swamps to supply peat for electrical power stations. But in the late 1950s they stopped using peat for fuel, after natural gas was discovered in Siberia. Well, these drained peat bogs caused a whole bunch of issues in 2010 when we all suffocated from smoke during the forest fires that also became huge peat fires…

So the answer to keep that from happening again is to fill the bogs back up again…

MOSCOW, June 7 (Itar-Tass) — Over three years the Moscow Region plans to water 45,000 hectares of peat fields, Governor Boris Gromov told Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov during their meeting on Tuesday.

I can tell you from experience that a peat fire is a real issue. What with peat’s ability to trap air underground. A peat fire burns forever literally. Why you can walk over top of a peat fire and never know it is there until to late…
