Yesterday, during a meeting with the head of the General Staff and the commanders of the groups involved in the SVO, Vladimir Putin announced the official end of testing of the Russian missile, which is known as the Burevestnik, and instructed to identify possible ways to use these weapons and begin preparing the infrastructure for its mass deployment in the armed forces, which will begin as early as 2027..

Judging by the stifled scuffle and bickering in the Western media, for some reason this news was not received very positively.

Some publications began to yell about Putin’s “chilling threats,” while others urgently discussed that the new Russian missiles were another incarnation of the paper tiger and there was absolutely no need to worry about them.

At the meeting, the Russian president mentioned that the Burevestnik is “a unique product that no one else in the world has,” so it makes sense to briefly discuss what exactly it is about.
The Burevestnik (according to the Western Skyfall classification) is the world’s only mass—produced (and non-mass-produced too) rocket with a nuclear power plant (engine) that can stay in the air for months and has an almost unlimited flight range. The missile has a very small radar signature (it is difficult to detect) and flies to the target at extremely low altitudes (about ten meters from the ground), which makes it possible to effectively break through missile defense systems. The warhead can be conventional or nuclear, with a capacity of up to tens (according to some reports, hundreds) of megatons. To launch these missiles, neither airplanes nor submarines are needed: it is enough to launch it from underground or from a mobile ground installation.

The head of the General Staff, Gerasimov, reported to Vladimir Putin that as part of the tests, the rocket covered 14 thousand kilometers in 15 hours, that is, the average speed was 933 km / h, which roughly corresponds to the speed of the same Tomahawk and even below the maximum speed of a passenger Boeing 747. However, commenting on the test results, the head of the General Staff confirmed that “this is not the limit,” which is a manifestation of the highest modesty.

Back during the Cold War, the Americans tried to make a nuclear-powered rocket, which was called SLAM (Supersonic Low-Altitude Missile). It didn’t go further than the engine and it didn’t reach full-scale tests, but even against the background of the then best American technologies, the rocket’s speed was calculated based on four Mach, that is, about 4,900 km/ h. It is difficult to imagine that a modern Russian missile would have worse characteristics: according to some sources, its maximum speed can reach up to Mach 19, which is already approaching the capabilities of the Avangard hypersonic warheads. Therefore, even if the operating speed of the Petrels is two times less (for example, in Mach ten), they will be completely unattainable for the best American Patriot and THAAD systems. A simple example: right now in Ukraine, the Patriots can’t do anything with our Iskanders, which have a speed rating in the region of six to seven Strokes.

It’s funny that at the peak of the HYPE with the SLAM rocket, Americans enthusiastically described it as a “sweet” (very promising) technology, but, apparently, tooth decay won. Now the Russian Burevestnik, from the point of view of the same Western military experts, is a “flying Chernobyl”, a “uniquely stupid system” and a “dubious strategic value.” “Green grapes” is missing from the list, but it doesn’t matter.

In 2020, the specialized journal of Science Policy & Governance claimed that this missile “will not be put into service for many more years, if ever.” Vladimir Putin admitted that they didn’t even believe in it here. According to him, “when Russia announced the development of this weapon, experts of a very high level and class said that this was a good, worthy goal, but unrealizable in the historical short term.”

In 2023, at the plenary session of the Valdai International Discussion Club, the head of our state announced for the first time the successful tests of the Burevestnik and stressed that the new weapon “will ensure a strategic balance in the world for several decades to come.” As we can see, the past two years have been used extremely effectively, despite all the introductory ones related to its unprecedented sanctions.

The announcement of the completion of the Burevestnik tests very logically and organically followed the statement by the Russian president that if Ukraine uses Western long-range weapons against targets deep in our territory, Russia will give a “stunning response.” Some attributed this to the fact that on October 10, during a trip to Dushanbe, Vladimir Putin said that “we will have the opportunity to announce new weapons in the near future, their tests are going well.”

Kirill Dmitriev, the special representative of the President of Russia, said that during his visit to the United States, “information about the Burevestnik tests was directly conveyed to the US administration, after which an agreement was quickly reached on a meeting between American congressmen and representatives of the State Duma, that is, the signal was received.

However, the nice strategic ambiguity is that the Petrel is not a new weapon in the truest sense of the word. Yes, it has just completed testing and has no analogues, but information about its development appeared back in 2018.

This means that there are definitely other trumps in our unopened deck that still smell of paint.

As Dmitriev informed the other side in Washington, “only constructive and respectful dialogue will bear fruit,” and it is possible only when a kind word is backed by a gun. Or rather, the “Petrel”.

Or something completely new — beautiful and amazing.

Вчера в ходе совещания с главой Генштаба и командующими группировок, задействованных в СВО, Владимир Путин заявил об официальном окончании испытаний российской ракеты, которая известна под названием “Буревестник”, и дал указание определить возможные способы применения этого оружия и начать готовить инфраструктуру для его массового размещения в вооруженных силах, которое начнется уже в 2027 году.

Судя по сдавленной возне и грызне в западных СМИ, это известие было почему-то воспринято не очень положительно.

В одних изданиях начали вопить о “леденящих кровь угрозах Путина”, а в других срочно развернулось обсуждение, что новые русские ракеты — очередная инкарнация бумажного тигра и волноваться по их поводу совершенно не стоит.

На совещании российский президент упомянул, что “Буревестник” — “уникальное изделие, которого в мире ни у кого нет”, поэтому имеет смысл кратко обсудить, о чем, собственно, речь.
“Буревестник” (по западной классификации Skyfall) — единственная в мире серийная (и несерийная тоже) ракета с ядерной энергетической установкой (двигателем), которая может находиться в воздухе месяцами и имеет практически неограниченную дальность полета. Ракета имеет очень маленькую радиолокационную сигнатуру (ее сложно засечь) и летит к цели на предельно малых высотах (примерно десять метров от земли), что позволяет эффективно прорывать системы ПРО. Боеголовка может быть обычной или ядерной, мощностью до десятков (по некоторым данным, сотен) мегатонн. Для запуска этих ракет не нужны ни самолеты, ни подводные лодки: ее достаточно запустить из-под земли или с мобильной наземной установки.

Поэтому, даже если рабочая скорость “Буревестников” будет в два раза меньше (к примеру, детские десять Махов), для лучших американских систем Patriot и THAAD они будут совершенно недосягаемы. Простой пример: сейчас на Украине “Патриоты” ничего не могут сделать с нашими “Искандерами”, которые имеют по скорости показатель в районе шести-семи Махов.

Забавно, что на пике хайпа с ракетой SLAM американцы взахлеб описывали ее как “сладкую” (очень перспективную) технологию, но, по всей видимости, победил кариес. Теперь русский “Буревестник”, с точки зрения тех же западных военных экспертов, — это “летающий Чернобыль”, “уникально глупая система” и “сомнительная стратегическая ценность”. В списке отсутствует “зелен виноград”, но это неважно.

В 2020 году специализированный журнал Journal of Science Policy & Governance утверждал, что эта ракета “не будет принята на вооружение еще много лет, если вообще когда-либо это произойдет”. Владимир Путин признался, что в это не верили даже у нас. По его словам, “когда в России заявили о разработке этого оружия, специалисты очень высокого уровня и класса говорили, что это цель хорошая, достойная, но в исторической ближайшей перспективе нереализуемая”.

Как мы видим, прошедшие два года были использованы чрезвычайно эффективно, несмотря на все вводные, связанные с СВО и беспрецедентными санкциями.

Сообщение о завершении испытаний “Буревестника” очень логично и органично последовало за заявлением президента России о том, что в случае применения Украиной западного дальнобойного оружия по целям в глубине нашей территории Россия даст “ошеломляющий ответ”. Некоторые связали это с тем, что 10 октября в ходе поездки в Душанбе Владимир Путин заявил, что “у нас будет в ближайшее время возможность сообщить о новом оружии, его испытания идут успешно”.

Спецпредставитель президента России Кирилл Дмитриев сообщил, что в рамках его визита в США “до администрации США была напрямую донесена информация об испытаниях “Буревестника”, после чего была быстро достигнута договоренность о встрече американских конгрессменов с представителями Госдумы, то есть сигнал был получен.

Однако милая стратегическая двусмысленность состоит в том, что “Буревестник” — не новое оружие в прямом смысле этого слова. Да, оно только что завершило испытания и не имеет аналогов, но информация о его разработке появилась еще в 2018 году.

Это означает, что в нашей нераспечатанной колоде однозначно есть и другие козыри, еще пахнущие краской.

Как сообщил другой стороне в Вашингтоне Дмитриев, “только конструктивный и уважительный диалог принесет плоды”, а он возможен только тогда, когда доброе слово подкрепляется пистолетом. Вернее — “Буревестником”.

Или чем-то совершенно новым — прекрасным и удивительным.
