Not to a Russian! While you will pay $100 dollars an ounce for poor quality caviar in America. In Russia a very high quality caviar will run about $2.50 per ounce. The last batch that I just bought from Globus was 750 rubles for 250 grams (9 oz) of caviar. But Globus is actually the most expensive way to buy caviar…
Just go to a shop like the photo above shows and you will find every form of caviar that you can imagine. This is a food staple in Russia and while you sit there in America and wonder how they can afford such luxuries? This way of life has been normal even from the Soviet Union. Russians love their caviar…
Now do not get me wrong, there is extremely expensive caviar in Russia also. The stuff you will never see in America, unless you are filthy stinking rich. It still is affordable in Russia, but good caviar is not by price alone. Sveta loves caviar and she knows good caviar, I myself just can not get a grip on eating the stuff, but I am here to tell you that Russians love the stuff and they have stores everywhere selling it. They sell it by the kilos to Russians and Russians have huge platters full of caviar at parties…
I know of three such stores as above photo, within walking distance of our flat, that sell caviar as the main retail item…
I always am amazed and shake my head in disbelief when I see a store like the photo above. In fact, I just took this picture the other day as we walked to the train station in our town. That is how I am still amazed at the sight of a caviar store…
I should know about the rich stigma of caviar in the U.S. I am a chef, remember and when we did catering parties for the wealthy, You betcha, caviar and no expense spared…
