Russia’s Medvedev signed an executive order On Establishing Diplomatic Relations with the Vatican!

Just in from the Russian Presidents Website!

Dmitry Medvedev signed an executive order On Establishing Diplomatic Relations with the Vatican:

In his order, President Medvedev instructed the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to hold talks with the Vatican on establishing diplomatic relations at the level of a Russian Federation Embassy in the Vatican and Apostolic Nunciature in Russia, transforming the Russian Consulate in the Vatican into an Embassy, and formalizing the agreements reached in relevant documents.

The political move follows decades of non communication between the Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox Churches.

The Orthodox Church accuses the Vatican of seeking to convert Russians to Catholics, which it denies.

This could be an interesting story to follow over the next year to see what happens…
