Secretary-General’s remarks to the Security Council – on the Middle East

https://www.un.org/sg/en/content/sg/speeches/2023-10-24/secretary-generals-remarks-the-security-council-the-middle-east%C2%A0

Mr. President, with your permission, I will make a small introduction and then ask my colleagues to brief the Security Council on the situation on the ground.

Excellencies,

The situation in the Middle East is growing more dire by the hour.

The war in Gaza is raging and risks spiralling throughout the region.

Divisions are splintering societies. Tensions threaten to boil over.

At a crucial moment like this, it is vital to be clear on principles — starting with the fundamental principle of respecting and protecting civilians.

I have condemned unequivocally the horrifying and unprecedented 7 October acts of terror by Hamas in Israel.

Nothing can justify the deliberate killing, injuring and kidnapping of civilians – or the launching of rockets against civilian targets.

All hostages must be treated humanely and released immediately and without conditions. I respectfully note the presence among us of members of their families.

Excellencies,

It is important to also recognize the attacks by Hamas did not happen in a vacuum.

The Palestinian people have been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation.

They have seen their land steadily devoured by settlements and plagued by violence; their economy stifled; their people displaced and their homes demolished. Their hopes for a political solution to their plight have been vanishing.

But the grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the appalling attacks by Hamas. And those appalling attacks cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.

Excellencies,

Even war has rules.

We must demand that all parties uphold and respect their obligations under international humanitarian law; take constant care in the conduct of military operations to spare civilians; and respect and protect hospitals and respect the inviolability of UN facilities which today are sheltering more than 600,000 Palestinians.

The relentless bombardment of Gaza by Israeli forces, the level of civilian casualties, and the wholesale destruction of neighborhoods continue to mount and are deeply alarming.

I mourn and honour the dozens of UN colleagues working for UNRWA – sadly, at least 35 and counting – killed in the bombardment of Gaza over the last two weeks.

I owe to their families my condemnation of these and many other similar killings.

The protection of civilians is paramount in any armed conflict.

Protecting civilians can never mean using them as human shields.

Protecting civilians does not mean ordering more than one million people to evacuate to the south, where there is no shelter, no food, no water, no medicine and no fuel, and then continuing to bomb the south itself.

I am deeply concerned about the clear violations of international humanitarian law that we are witnessing in Gaza.

Let me be clear: No party to an armed conflict is above international humanitarian law.

Excellencies,

Thankfully, some humanitarian relief is finally getting into Gaza.

But it is a drop of aid in an ocean of need.

In addition, our UN fuel supplies in Gaza will run out in a matter of days. That would be another disaster.

Without fuel, aid cannot be delivered, hospitals will not have power, and drinking water cannot be purified or even pumped.

The people of Gaza need continuous aid delivery at a level that corresponds to the enormous needs. That aid must be delivered without restrictions.

I salute our UN colleagues and humanitarian partners in Gaza working under hazardous conditions and risking their lives to provide aid to those in need. They are an inspiration.

To ease epic suffering, make the delivery of aid easier and safer, and facilitate the release of hostages, I reiterate my appeal for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.

Excellencies,

Even in this moment of grave and immediate danger, we cannot lose sight of the only realistic foundation for a true peace and stability: a two-State solution.

Israelis must see their legitimate needs for security materialized, and Palestinians must see their legitimate aspirations for an independent State realized, in line with United Nations resolutions, international law and previous agreements.

Finally, we must be clear on the principle of upholding human dignity.

Polarization and dehumanization are being fueled by a tsunami of disinformation.

We must stand up to the forces of antisemitism, anti-Muslim bigotry and all forms of hate.

Mr. President,
Excellencies,

Today is United Nations Day, marking 78 years since the UN Charter entered into force.

That Charter reflects our shared commitment to advance peace, sustainable development and human rights.

On this UN Day, at this critical hour, I appeal to all to pull back from the brink before the violence claims even more lives and spreads even farther.

Thank you very much.

My Huawei Mate 50 just died a terrible death by an “Evil Charger” and a Mate 60 is the answer…

What do you do?

I plugged my Huawei Mate 50 in to charge and 30 seconds later, the charger decided to short out and send 220 volts straight to the phone…

What a horrible death…

Did not know that a charger would do that?

It is as if I just plugged the USB straight to the wall socket… 🙁

Not a nice thing to have happen at TRV in the middle of nowhere and farther than that from somewhere…

But, I have been reading about, with joy I might add, that Huawei is roaring back and I suspect that this time, the USA has no more bullets to try to cheat the system against Huawei, trying to protect iPhone from real competition…

https://www.reuters.com/technology/chinas-huawei-sells-16-mln-mate-60-pro-handsets-six-weeks-research-firm-2023-10-19/ Rock and Roll Huawei, Rock and Roll…

And I hope Huawei puts Apple iPhone out of business…

Also, Sveta and I will do our best to help Huawei. Either a Mate 60 and or P60 Huawei will replace the fried Mate 50…

Yes, it is out of warranty and yes, I will take it apart and try to rebuild it. Except, it looks like it will cost more for parts that I paid in the first place…

Interesting, I only brought my old Samsung Galaxy Edge to play with and here I am writing this post on it. Gives me a very good detailed idea about how far apart an old flagship phone is compared to a new flagship phone…

But the Edge brings back memories and it is rooted. Oh my, I have been playing around and even installing different ROM’s…

Poor Georgia as in Sassy’s Time as president, is being pushed into war with Russia by the USA…

Has become very clear that Georgia is under huge pressure by the West to attack Russia and open a new front against Russia. Russia knows this and is ready. Georgia has no intention, but paid USA lackeys in the government of Georgia are pushing hard…

Let us watch and see what comes of this…

Gonna go to the Tiny Russian Village (TRV) for a week or so…

A few days of silence on the website and a few days of contemplation for me and my Sweetpea…

This morning my weight and BMI for my weight. I am sitting just right and this has been many many years since I have been this light on the feet…

My Body Mass Index reading (BMI)

The thing is that when I was a teenager, I was heavily muscled and never ever met these guidelines. I am just glad to see these numbers as an oldster. This is when it counts the most for my aging body needs these much lighter weights that I have obtained now…

Going to walk in the TRV and take pictures of everything as Fall leaves us to Old Man Winter. Should snow good while we are there and we get to see how Sammy the Volga does with her new rear end work that was done…

Have a nice day and see you in a bit…

The hair triggered Western responses are why the East must tread like on rice paper…

I see so many comments from all over the world. The impatience within humans is amazing. Everyone from armchair general Russians, armchair general Americans to armchair general Ugandans, want to all start lobbing missiles all over the place…

Fine and dandy fools, but when that one with your name on it is overhead, you will sing the blues very quickly…

God made fools for enjoyment of normal people, but I do not believe that he intended on humans breeding so many fools at once…

The East has no choice but to move slow and easy. When you have a mental patient that can be triggered very easily, you gotta walk as light footed as possibly you can…

The West is certifiablly mentally ill and they have nukes…

Think about psychos with nukes!

West = Psycho Sicko

Maria Zakharova talks about “knitting needles” & sanctions from the west…

EU Observer: “Lithuania wants to ban the export of nails, buttons, sewing needles and knitting needles to Russia. Such proposals for the 12th package of EU sanctions are part of Vilnius’ plans to “destroy Russian industrial capacity.”

Illustration for the post: https://t.me/MariaVladimirovnaZakharova/6458

A year ago I was at a meeting with Chinese business circles in Moscow. We are chatting, and suddenly a message pops up on the phone with the news that the United States has adopted yet another anti-Russian sanctions measures banning the supply of elevators and related equipment to Russia. According to the authors of this decision, this measure should “paralyze the construction industry in Russia.” When I read this news to my Chinese colleagues, they were filled with Homeric laughter. They literally groaned and burst into laughter. After the sanctioned hara-kiri of the Japanese automobile industry on the Russian market, the most incredible dream of Chinese manufacturers came true, who in six months reconfirmed the truth “a holy place is never empty.”

It’s scary to imagine what kind of hysteria will begin among Chinese manufacturers of knitting needles and buttons if they learn about Lithuania’s plans to “destroy Russian industrial capacities.”

Where will Lithuania go with all this if such a decision is made? I don’t know, they can put the inscription “to the evil of Russia” on their highway with buttons, nails, knitting needles and needles.
