The detonations of pagers in Lebanon were probably caused by malicious messages, Lebanese information security expert Khalil Sehnaoui told RIA Novosti.
Dozens of people were injured when pagers detonated in a suburb of the Lebanese capital Beirut.
Such devices are still used by members of the Hezbollah movement in a closed communication system. It is not yet known what caused the simultaneous detonation.
Either the devices… were pre-hacked before they were shipped to Lebanon to create a vulnerability that was later activated… or they had information about the make and model of devices used by Hezbollah, making it easier to create a message that would cause the devices’ software to overheat the hardware
As previously reported by the Lebanese Ministry of Health, more than 2.8 thousand people were injured as a result of detonation of pagers in the country. Hospitals in Beirut, Saida and Tyre are overflowing with victims.
According to a number of media outlets, pagers are used by members of the Hezbollah movement as a closed communication system that is least susceptible to hacking and eavesdropping.
