No internal passport, just external passports…
This has been an issue and it looks like Russia has finally getting ready to stop the flow of non-international passport holding Ukrainians. Or at least check them out better, before they allow them to just waltz into Russia with ease. Ukraine has been literally terrorizing Russians for years now on the border crossings. I know I have been there and watched how Ukraine treats the Russians. Russia was not and has not been rude in this aspect…
I am glad to see so work by Russia in treating Ukrainians along the line that Ukraine treats the Russians. It may not seem like much, but Ukrainians have been basically never checked, hardly at all, to cross into Russia. This has and is causing some issues…
KIEV, December 5. /TASS/. The Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers plans to bar Ukrainian citizens from crossing the Russian border on their domestic passport starting from March 1, 2020, Director of the Consular Service Department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Sergei Pogoreltsev said in a comment to the Ukrainian news agency UNIAN.
“The government is going to terminate the possibility of crossing the border with the Russian Federation for Ukrainian citizens on their domestic Ukrainian passports and birth certificates,” he said.
Pogoreltsev said that the draft resolution by the Cabinet of Ministers stipulated the suspension of the provisions of the agreements with Russia as of 1997 and 2011, which allowed border crossings without presenting a foreign travel passport. This initiative is attributed to the fact that the simplified order for crossing the border with Russia by Ukrainian citizens allegedly “poses a threat to Ukraine’s state security.”
He added that Ukrainians staying in Russia could apply for a foreign passport in the embassy and consular missions of Ukraine. “Currently more than 4,000 Ukrainian citizens already used this right and received [their] biometric foreign travel passports at our facilities on Russian soil,” he added.
Starting from March 1, 2015, Kiev banned Russian citizens from entering Ukrainian territory on their domestic Russian passports “for security concerns.” Since then, Russians can entry Ukraine only upon presenting a foreign travel passport. Still, Russia did not respond to this move in kind, and Ukrainian citizens may enter Russian territory on their domestic passports.

Almost all of the old Soviet countries have never had to have a International Passport, just the Internal Passport was required to enter Russia. This has been a pet peeve of mine since I came to Russia 13 + years ago…
Did not seem fair that all these countries lying about and sending trouble to Russia, had a free entrance accessibility. Many times I have watched people cross into Russia and they only had a birth certificate and some other papers and still entered Russia…
In March of 2019 I did a border crossing by train… (Just read what happened.)
I hope Russia does not do what Ukraine does to the Russians at the border, but I feel that having better ID and biometric safety in the passport is a necessity…
As Svetochka says, “That is just right!”

PS: Sveta has to make sure she carries her International Passport when we travel to another country, even if we travel to Ukraine. They will not let her cross otherwise…
