The Sun Shined Today in Russia!

In Russia the sun does not like to get very high in the sky! Lets look at a picture of the sun at “High Noon!” (Or should we say “Low noon?”) This was taken today and I promise you that the sun is not very warm. This was the first real sight of the sun for what seems like two months. The sky is clear and that means real cold is coming! At the taking of this picture the thermometer was reading -21 degrees below zero Celsius. I hear rumors of -30 degrees below zero…
Lets step back a few weeks to this New Years and see what we did on New Years night! Warning we are not very exciting…

Above, is our local theater and they had a New Years tree and music!

Above, is my Sweetie (Svetlana) and she has a new toy…

Above, it got busier and busier…

Above and below, I found neat posters and took some pictures…

Like I said we are not very wild but we had fun. Every once in awhile I like to post pictures in Windows to Russia instead of the Photo Blog. So now you have seen a little more of Russia that you have not seen before…

Russia is Diversifying Out of the Dollar!

Something that you will not hear much of and you should be hearing is:

Russia’s foreign exchange reserves were evenly split between dollar and euros. This is the third largest reserves in the world and Russia has gone from heavy in the dollar to equal percentages in a very short time. That should be an attention grabber but if that is not enough…

Russia announced yesterday in the news, that Russia will be buying Canadian dollars and securities in a bid to diversify its foreign exchange reserves, to an even greater extent. Talk is in the air about purchasing Australian currency to help buffer against the dying dollar…

Now do not take my word or Russia’s word – Take the word of Financial Times! Read the article here that I found after the announcements in the last few days.

Russia has been busy for months and so has China. They are trying to get ahead of the upcoming dollar crash that I have talked about on several occasions in a few of my blogs. In fact many countries have already begun trading the dollar off especially in the Asian area. This is well hidden in the Western news but just look around and you will see how America is having to purchase her own debt:

This past year the Fed bought 80% of new government debt or $1.2 trillion worth as foreigners bought only $300 billion worth. To think this program will end is pure folly. There will be no one to buy the debt, which grows larger with each minute. Deficits will run more than $1.5 trillion a year as far as the eye can see. Revenues continue to fall and spending to rise. Foreigners are dumping dollars not accumulating them. Worse yet many other nations have similar problems. They have to raise money as well. Who will accommodate them? We are talking $10 trillion alone for the G20 countries, some of which are on the edge of bankruptcy. Then again where will the money come from to bail out the likes of California, New York, New Jersey, Florida, Nevada, Arizona, etc.? There just isn’t enough money to go around. The Fed has to increase printing money and issuing credit; there is no other choice short of economic collapse. The price to be paid for this Keynesian profligacy is hyperinflation and you can be sure it is already in the money pipeline. (Link)

So once again lets wait and see what happens as the future unfolds. But my thoughts are falling into the “Buy Gold and Silver!”

Russia Shakes Her Head at Poland Over New Missile Issue!

In Russia the issue today is “Poland to place American missiles at Russian border.”

Now while this is a true statement it is in a grey area of truth. Yes missiles are being placed near a Russian border. But they are Patriot missiles and it is the border of Kaliningrad. Kaliningrad is Russia but part of Russia in a strange place.
For those of you who do not know where Kaliningrad is take a look at the map. Kaliningrad is not attached to the main body of the Russian country. Kinda like Alaska and the mainland USA but Kaliningrad is a whole bunch smaller than Alaska. 🙂

Kaliningrad houses the Russian Baltic Fleet at the port of Baltiysk and is Russia’s only European ice-free port. So is it important? Yes! Is it Russia? Yes! Is Poland putting some form of missile within a Hundred Kilometers of it? Yes! Is America involved? Yes! Does it all make sense? No!

What is Poland defending from with a Patriot Missile? The Patriot Missile has a Operational range of 160 kilometres or 99 miles. Also the Patriot Missile system does not have a flawless history. I remember well that Israel was not happy campers at the success rate of the missiles, as Scuds from Iraq still got through. This issue was declared to be happening because the Scud missiles were so poorly built that they had an extremely erratic flight path and thus were very difficult to intercept! I remember that the Patriot Missile tracking software always hit the Scud at the tail end. Thus a Scud still tumbled to earth and exploded…

As usual there is much more to this situation than meets the eye or ear. So we will have to just wait it out and see what comes of this cat and mouse games by America, Poland and Russia!

Russia Gets Dunkin’ Donuts to Sweeten Her Tooth!

In Russia the American donut producer, Dunkin’ Donuts, has franchised its brand to a Russian company which plans to open ten locations this year (2010) in Moscow. Looks like Burger King is not the only company that sees money in the Russian financial system.

The chain will be open in various formats, from full-fledged freestanding stores to attached mini-cafes and they say that the investment into each location is going to be around six million roubles each.

This is a reattempt as originally there was a failure with Dunkin’ Donuts back around 1996. It seems that Russia was not ready for Dunkin’ Donuts…

Do you think that Russia is ready for Dunkin’ Donuts?

Medvedev Putin Song and Dance Animation New Year 2010!

This video has been out for a while and I really like it. I have looked for a good English translation version and this seems to be the best I can find. If I find better I will transpose it.
It is a very funny video and even if all you do is watch it, it is fun!
Svetlana really likes this video and laughs a lot.
So sit a spell and have a watch…

Moscow, Russia Just Melts the Snow!

and…

I really was wondering what Moscow did with all the snow that they loaded up in dump trucks. All over the city you can see thousands of dump trucks and loaders 24 hours a day hauling snow.
Now I know what they do with that snow. It makes sense because you can not just keep pushing snow higher and higher. Unlike in America it never gets above freezing here for up to three months or more. So the snow never goes away…
I was impressed!

Update From Windows to Russia! (Visa Run Time)

January has been a very busy month here in Russia and I have to apologize for a slow down in posting. What with New years , Christmas, my birthday and several important business engagements, I have not been able to keep up. To top the list at the end of this week I have to travel to Kiev, Ukraine for my visa trip.

Svetlana already got my train tickets and I have to leave by this Saturday (23rd) to get out of Russia on time. I always wonder will I get back in Russia with out any trouble? So far I have made it back…
I will have a post on getting a visa from Ukraine for Russia when I get back. Hopefully I will be back by Tuesday (26th). But as any of you know who have been following this blog – You know that a few days can turn into almost a month before I get home again.
So “knock on wood” may this be a smooth visa trip to Ukraine.

Russia Watches For Round Two of Ukraine 2010 Presidential Elections!

Ukraine is blessed with one outcome of the latest elections: Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko is history and I hope they keep him buried there!

Former PM Viktor Yanukovych led current PM Yulia Tymoshenko by some 36% to 25%. With Yushchenko less than 5%. So that looks like on February 2nd that a run off between Viktor Yanukovych and Yulia Tymoshenko will happen.

Yulia will according to news sources gather more votes due to all the others being voted out and could very well take the next election…

If this all equates to a better world for Ukraine, then we will have to wait and see. But somehow I would not “hold my breath!”

At least Viktor Yushchenko is “out of there!” Now if they can just get “Sassy” out of Georgia…

There is a New Kid in Town: Let The French Fry Wars Begin!

Russia is advancing so fast into the wonderful world of Capitalism, that it makes your head spin! Anyone from America knows about the competition between McDonald’s and Burger King. The fry wars have been brutal and viscous. 🙂 People have argued for years about who has the best French Fries and is Flame Broiled really better?

On January 21st, 2010 Moscow gets her very first Burger King – May the Burger and Fry wars commence!

Burger King, the world’s second largest fast food chain after McDonald’s, is launching its first Russian operation this week, under license of coffeehouse chain Shokoladnitsa. (Link)

I myself being a proclaimed American have missed my Burger King! I need a Double Whooper With Cheese and an order of Burger King onion rings. So in the future it looks like a trip to the new Burger King is in order just to see if the food is the same.

I can tell you that the food at a Russian or Ukraine McDonald’s is better than in America so I hope that tradition follows with Burger King.
The problem with Russians is that McDonald’s is their place to eat. It is considered a restaurant here. Kentucky Fried Chicken (Rostik’s- KFC) struggles here in Russia and I really think that Burger King will have to have very long term sights in order to see a profitable future.
Everyday I see a little more America in the Russian way and life. After 4 years here, I have witnessed huge changes and many times I turn to Svetlana and will say: “Are you sure we are not in America?”
So Lets “Have it Your Way at Burger King!”

Russia Sends Hospital and Doctors to Haiti!

Russia readies Haiti disaster relief – Russia Beyond the Headlines: “According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti on Tuesday. The quake’s epicenter was 10 miles southwest of the Haitian capital, at a depth of just 6 miles. It was followed by dozens of aftershocks, including two measuring 5.9 and 5.0.

A Russian ministry spokesman said an Il-76 plane will leave for Haiti on Thursday with 45 people onboard, including 20 doctors.

The hospital, equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic and surgery
facilities, can accommodate up to 50 patients at one time.

It can also employ, if necessary, an intensive care unit for 6-10 beds.
Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive told CNN the death toll from the quake could reach ‘well over 100,000.’

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev earlier on Wednesday sent his condolences to his Haitian counterpart Rene Preval over the devastating earthquake.” (Read More of original article!)

Everyone stop a moment today and think about how bad this earthquake was! Mother Nature is very unforgiving at times…
